Laser hair removal has become one of the most requested services at our Tomball studio. At Tourmaline Skin Care & Laser, we work with clients of all skin types and hair colors, and the most common question we get is: “How do I get ready for laser hair removal?”
Preparation affects results. If you’re booking your first session—or even if you’ve done it before—these tips will guide you through the best way to prep your skin and ensure your treatments are as effective and comfortable as possible.
1. Shave Before Your Appointment — But Not the Day Of
We recommend shaving the treatment area 24 hours before your session. Shaving right before can irritate your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. Avoid waxing, plucking, or using depilatory creams in the weeks prior; we need the hair root intact for the laser to target.
Why it matters:
The laser tracks pigment down the follicle. No root = no results.
2. Avoid Sun Exposure for Two Weeks Before Your Session
Tanned skin and lasers don’t mix well. Whether it’s natural sun or a tanning bed, UV exposure increases the risk of pigmentation issues after your session. If you’ve had sun exposure recently, we may need to reschedule your treatment for safety.
Use a broad-spectrum SPF every day, especially if the treatment area is exposed. Sun damage can delay your treatment timeline and reduce results.
3. Skip Skincare Products with Active Ingredients
In the 48 hours leading up to your appointment, stop using:
- Retinols
- Glycolic acid
- Salicylic acid
- Benzoyl peroxide
These products can increase skin sensitivity and make the laser process uncomfortable. Come to your appointment with clean, product-free skin.
If you’re unsure about your products, bring them with you to your session and we’ll review them together.
4. Stay Away from Bleach or Hair Dyes
Laser works best on natural hair color—especially dark hair, which absorbs more of the laser energy. If the hair has been bleached or dyed, it becomes harder for the laser to target effectively. This can lead to missed patches or the need for more sessions.
If you’ve recently bleached or dyed the treatment area, let us know. We may need to adjust your treatment plan.
5. Hydrate Your Skin, but Avoid Oils or Lotions Day Of
Hydrated skin responds better to laser treatments. Dry, flaky skin can make the process less effective and more uncomfortable. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer daily in the week leading up to your appointment.
However, on the day of your appointment, do not apply:
- Oils
- Lotions
- Deodorants (if treating underarms)
- Makeup (if treating the face)
We want your skin to be clean and dry when the laser is applied.
6. Know What Medications You’re Taking
Some medications increase your sensitivity to light, such as:
- Antibiotics
- Accutane
- Certain antidepressants
- Birth control pills
Before your session, let us know what you’re taking. If necessary, we’ll recommend a safe window between your meds and your treatment schedule.
7. Don’t Schedule Around Your Period (if Treating the Bikini Area)
Hormonal changes can increase pain sensitivity. If you’re getting laser hair removal on your bikini area, we suggest scheduling your session for a few days before or after your period rather than during. Many of our clients report that laser feels more intense during their cycle.
If your schedule can’t be adjusted, consider taking a non-aspirin pain reliever about 30 minutes before the session. We’ll also apply a cooling gel for extra comfort.
8. Plan Around Major Events
Laser hair removal isn’t instant—it takes multiple sessions, usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. If you’re prepping for a vacation, wedding, or photo shoot, you’ll want to start your treatments at least 3 to 6 months in advance.
Redness or mild irritation can last up to 48 hours after your session, so avoid scheduling sessions the day before a big event.
Use our online booking system to plan your sessions out in advance.
9. Wear Comfortable, Loose Clothing
After treatment, your skin may feel warm or slightly swollen. Tight clothing can rub or trap heat against the skin, which can increase irritation.
If we’re treating:
- Bikini or Brazilian: wear loose cotton underwear
- Legs: avoid tight leggings or jeans
- Underarms: wear a sleeveless top or something breathable
We also recommend avoiding intense workouts or hot showers for 24 hours post-treatment to prevent further irritation.
10. Ask Questions — Every Session Can Be Different
No two people experience laser the same way. That’s why we take time during each visit to talk through your progress, skin condition, and goals. Don’t hesitate to ask:
- How many more sessions will I need?
- What areas can we treat next?
- Can I combine this with facials or peels?

Why Preparation Affects Results
Most people need 6 to 8 sessions for permanent reduction. Skipping prep steps—like shaving properly or avoiding sun exposure—can interrupt that progress. Even something simple like using the wrong lotion the morning of can cause unexpected skin reactions or interfere with laser absorption.
Every session builds on the last. By arriving prepared, you’re making sure each treatment gives you the full benefit.
Bonus: What Happens If You Don’t Prep?
If you arrive to your session without following the guidelines, we may have to:
- Postpone your session
- Reduce the energy level, making the session less effective
- Apply extra skin-soothing treatments afterward
To avoid setbacks, use the booking reminders we send via text and email. These always include a prep checklist.
Aftercare Is Just As Important
Once you’ve had your session, treat your skin with care:
- Apply aloe vera or fragrance-free lotion
- Avoid heat, friction, or excessive sweat
- Don’t exfoliate or shave for a few days
For those interested in ongoing skincare, we offer custom facials and skincare treatments that pair well with your laser hair removal timeline.
